What is NIPT?

NIPT, or non-invasive prenatal testing, is a screening test that can provide information about the genetics of a developing baby during pregnancy. It is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it does not pose any risk to the baby or mother.

During NIPT, a small blood sample is taken from the mother. This blood contains fragments of the baby’s DNA that have entered the mother’s bloodstream. The DNA is then analyzed to look for specific genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities.

The test can detect conditions such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13). It can also screen for certain sex chromosome disorders and specific genetic conditions.

It’s important to note that while NIPT is highly accurate, it is a screening test and not a diagnostic test. If the results indicate a higher risk for a genetic condition, further diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
